Can someone explain why I would want to build a rear horn loaded enclosure verses a tuned reflex port? Why not horn load both the front and back of the speaker with mirror horns? I've made a sketch. Just need to build a big wood steamer and make some curved plywood.

Horn loading the back increases efficiency. Problem is as I have already stated severe phase issues.

You simply misstated the problem is why you got wrong info. In your case two large mouths became one huge one. The effect is drastically increased by proximity just as I said.
